Another city meeting, another city winner as the all conquering Chris Waller Stables produced a further victory at Warwick Farm. Sitting at 161.5 wins for the Sydney Premiership he is now demolishing the previous best of 156 wins held by Waterhouse.
Team Waller recorded victory when Madam Nash won the 2200m event with Nash Rawiller in the saddle. The pair had been first past the post earlier with Clever Boy but lost the race in the protest room.
The loss on protest hurt Nash more than Chris, as it deducted a win on the jockeys tally as he is in a gallant chase to catch leading rider Hugh Bowman to claim the jockeys premiership.
CHRIS WALLER - On top of the Sydney Racing Scene
Waller surpassed Waterhouse’s longstanding Sydney premiership mark of 156 winners a few meeting back, smashing through that glass ceiling and has since gone on with the job, currently sitting at 161.5 wins.
On her return to racing, it’s reported Waterhouse told the Daily Telegraph’s Christian Nicolussi about her thoughts on the Waller juggernaut. She stated she had “written to Chris Waller (congratulating him) on his great feat.”
Waterhouse said of herself;
“I was born into Australian racing, I was lucky enough to have a Champion trainer as my father, and he was my mentor.”
Waterhouse added, “Chris (Waller) has come from another country with
nothing behind him, except for a couple of owners and taken everything
before him. He's a great trainer.”
Obviously acknowledging she can’t win the Trainers Premiership; Waterhouse is reported to have told the Daily Telegraph that she has the ambition to attempt to knock off Chris Waller’s title of training the most Gr1 Winners of a season next year.
Whilst she has previously achieved this Gr1 Winners title on 5 occasions, it’s hard to envisage this happening again for racing’s highest profile female trainer, as her stranglehold on Sydney Racing has slipped noticeably of recent years and simply, she hasn’t won this Gr1 Winners title now for 4 seasons with the last time being in 2009.
Without the horses such as More Joyous (Singleton) and Pierro now both retired and unavailable to add to her Gr1 tally, the task she has set herself has become significantly more difficult. However whatever happens, with 69 Gr1 Races in Australia each year, the battle will be intriguing.
MORE JOYOUS - A big loss to Gai Waterhouse
For the record, we are supporting Chris Waller to win both titles again next season and have supplied him with some fantastic Dynamic Syndications horses to achieve this result.
