Dynamic 3yo filly RAPT, who is owned by an ALL LADIES Co-Ownership Team, recorded her much deserved second race win of her career when far too good for her peers on Tuesday at the Gosford provincial meeting transferred to Scone due to renovation works being carried out at Gosford.
RAPT trained by Jason Deamer and ridden by Ash Morgan won Race 7, the SMART COMMERCIAL SOLAR Provincial Class 1 Handicap (1600m) on a Heavy 10, running 1:40.95 Last 600m: 0:36.71.
RAPT - a 3yo Bay Filly by MORE THAN READY (USA) from GHENWAA took her overall career to:
12 starts = 2 wins: 4 seconds: 2 thirds: 2 fourths and Prizemoney: $106,175
CONGRATULATIONS to the ALL OUR GIRLS who race RAPT: Dynamic Ladies, Mrs C Freeman, Mrs A T Woollett, Mrs K Corby, Mrs M Whitton, Mrs B Krezo, Ms L I Kennedy, Mrs T M O'Sullivan, Mrs M Seminara, Mrs B Cooper, Mrs B A Reid, Ms L Woollett
For her terrific team, RAPT was certainly overdue this victory. Our ever-consistent filly has been the recipient of some wicked luck in several of her runs this prep, including at her most recent start at Newcastle where she was second by just 0.17 length and she is still to this day, looking for a way out of traffic jams in that race.
Facing the starter for the sixth time of this prep, and for her twelfth career start, her record of one win and 6 placings, plus two fourths was very consistent, and we have always held high hopes for this filly, believing the older and more mature she gets, the better she will be, but working her out and identifying her true racing pattern has been a work in progress. She has a barn storming finish however over shorter races, early she had been going keen using valuable petrol and then has been running on fumes the final 50m of her races.
Team Dynamic and Trainer Jason Deamer were convinced we had to try something different and restrain her early, to let her peel off her advantage of late closing speed.
Out to a mile was also in her wheelhouse based upon her genetics being by a Derby Winner from a broodmare sire known for miler plus progeny. At the mile trip she had time to settle rather than be bustled to settle a touch closer in a more frantic early settling pace.
Rapt has also shown a liking for rain affected ground and she certainly got that in this race, where the track was a bog with a Heavy 10 rating.
Asked to carry 57.0kgs for a 3yo filly she was not well in at the weights here, as she was giving older males weight or only receiving 1.0kgs off the top weighted horses, where she would normally receive 2.0kgs for the sex bias. However, she was simply far too good and blew her opposition off the paddock with a powerful display.
Sticking to our beliefs she needed to be back and saving energy for the final 600m of the race, we elected to go with a pre-race plan that from the outside barrier in the field of 8 runners, we wanted Ash to come out of the barriers neutral and take hold and let those underneath him put tempo into the race. Then work over to the fence keeping our filly under a tight hold over the first 200m of the race.
Next, we anticipated our main danger on paper would be Let’s Go Johnny (Andrew Gibbons) whom we expected to be back in the field as well. We wanted Ash to get in behind that runner if possible and when approaching the 600m start to improve as we expected Let’s Go Johnny would be improving at the same time, and it would give us a bunny to follow into the straight and chase down.
As the gates crashed back, the first 1000m of the race panned-out beautifully, just as we had hoped it would off the speed maps we had devised.
Ash was able to restrain Rapt as the early leader Coastal Grove was being annoyed by outsider Dancemania and that pair put genuine speed into the race, which stretched the 8-horse field out over 10 lengths. Let’s Go Johnny settled in 7th spot, 8 lengths off the speed, and we were at the tail by ourselves, spotting the leaders 10-lengths.
Nothing really changed in the pattern of the race until the 650m mark when the field started to compact up as they approached the point of the home turn.
Ash was getting itchy waiting for Let’s Go Johnny to start to move up and challenge, but it was all out and floundering, going nowhere. That forced Ash to be flushed out 4-deep as the field rounded the home turn to balance into the straight, and we were still at least 6-7 lengths off the leaders.
Ash then waited until balanced, and when he had clear galloping room, began to urge our filly along.
Within a blink, Rapt found a gear and started to extend quickly. Passing the 200m marker, Ash was finishing strongly as the leader and eventual runner-up was still digging-in for the challenge.
Still spotting the leader 3 lengths at that point, Ash then asked Rapt to extend and by the 100m mark,
Rapt had swept to the lead and Ash was able to give our filly an easy cruise to the line under no pressure, yet our filly kept extending her lead stride-by-stride and as the camera flashed, she had an eased down but recorded a widening 1.95 length winning margin for the photo for the wall.
Job Done!
RAPT (3yo F)(57.0kgs) ($2.30 fav) ridden by Ash Morgan had defeated Coastal Grove (3yo G) (Zac Lloyd)(58.0kgs) by 1.95 lengths, with Atacama (4yo G)(Braith Nock a)(53.0kgs) in third spot 2.84 lengths from the winner.
RAPT banked $26,625 including the BOBS Bonus for the provincial class win, taking her prizemoney through the $100,000 ceiling. This was our filly’s 6th run for the campaign – 1 win; 1 second; 2 thirds; 1 fourth; 1 fifth (metro) and earnings of $47,190.
Gavin Carmody for Sky Channel commenced his race summary after the horses crossed the line.
“No hard luck story today about Rapt, who comes from last, down the centre of the track, and sails away for victory here, for Ash Morgan and Jason Deamer.
“She puts her second win on the board today this filly, and she’s won with some authority there over Coastal Grove who tried to make all out in front and gave a good kick at the top of the straight. Atacama winds up in third, and the money horse Order To Charge will be fourth.
“She spotted them a fair start, but she’s rounded them up and raced clear to win and win very well.”
Sky Channel Co-commentator Mick Wallace then added: “Yeah they have really found the key to her now. That’s just don’t bustle her early, and just let her get into her rhythm at the tail of the field and build her confidence. She was able to steam home over the top of them.
“That was a good performance, and we had mentioned earlier that it was ‘quite surprising’ that she had only won the one from eleven prior. Early on in her career, she was ridden closer to the speed, and she just wasn’t finishing off, and perhaps they found this pattern. She was back last, they did go along at a genuine clip, which suited the backmarkers but Rapt was in a class of her own today and she justifies the favouritism tag.”
Gavin Carmody then added: “Indeed she does, she won by two lengths in the end, a length between second and third, in 1:40.95.”
Our trainer Jason Deamer, was then interviewed by Gavin Carmody who started by saying: “No hard luck story today Jason, she was terrific!”
Jason Deamer responded: “Yeah that’s right. She settled okay at the back of the field, she was just on the bridle a little bit, but they ran along at a nice pace. Yeah, Ash got her out wide and gave her plenty of time to wind up and she was very strong again through the line.
“It was a good strong win from her, she’s been knocking on the door there for a while, the whole prep really. She’s been racing very consistently, so it was very good to see her put it all together today, and great to do it for Dynamic Syndications!”
Gavin Carmody came in then and emphasised “The Ladies Syndicate, so the Ladies will be happy!”
To which Jason retorted with a big smile; “Yeah – even better! Thank you.”
Gavin Carmody then continued his commentary by saying: “Now Ash has unsaddled this filly by More Than Ready out of a Street Cry mare, bred at Corumbene Stud. She has won her second race at start twelve, and six minor placings, and they have come home in 36.71 and she’s won well coming from the back and sailing down the centre of the track, to race clear and win well.”
Then Gavin Carmody said to our jockey Ash Morgan: “She got back and she stormed home, she was much too good.”
Ash answered: “Yeah that’s right. She’s been a touch frustrating this preparation because over at Newcastle, (3rd on 4th May 1300m) she ambled up to them, but we rode her too close I think, so we started riding her back and quiet, and out to a mile today. The key was to get her to switch off in the first part and get her to do no work. The plan was to follow ‘Gibbo’ (Andrew Gibbons aboard “Let’s Go Johnny) into the race, but his horse wasn’t going anywhere at the 600m, so I had to make a long run by myself, and she was entitled to peak and plateau late, but she didn’t. So ridden that way she quickened up really well and she can probably go through her grades that way. She always promised a bit, but she’s just been a bit frustrating.”
Gavin then added: “She’s starting to deliver now – good job piloting Rapt to victory.”
Sky Channel presenter Ally Mosley then added-in: “Nice win there for the favourite Rapt, a 3yo filly by More Then Ready, who came from the back romped home to pay $2.30.”
This was Dynamic Syndications 884th Race Win overall and our 56th Win for the season; 18 (32%) of our race wins this season have been trained by Jason Deamer.
