Ring the Bell !
Dynamic Syndications have
achieved a
new company milestone as we
break our own previous record for the
Number of WINS in a Racing Season, as
our 2YO Filly NOTIONS became
our 69th Race Winner for this 2020/21 Racing Season and we
bettered our benchmark of
68 Wins we achieved in
2009/10.
Our RICHARD FREEDMAN trained filly was having her first start for her new DYNAMIC OWNERSHIP TEAM as she faced the starter at Nowra on Monday in Race 5, the Solomon Motors Group Fillies and Mares Maiden Handicap over 1200m on a Heavy 9 surface.
Ridden to perfection by
Brodie Loy, Brodie was afforded an armchair ride over the final 75m to
claim the event by 2.5 lengths.
NOTIONS means a
conception of or belief about something.
Team Dynamic had a
belief in the aptly named, then
AQUIS owned NOTIONS when the
2YO filly was offered for unreserved sale at the
2021 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale, as part of the
AQUIS dispersal of fillies and mares which they owned and raced.
AQUIS had undergone a change in business philosophy, which resulted in them only wanting to race colts to develop into stallion prospects, so fillies and mares were no longer part of their business strategy, therefore they offered more than a dozen for sale.
Having done our own due diligence, both genetically and commercially, and having
our Vet Dr Tim Roberts give her the all clear, we
held the belief that this
2YO filly NOTIONS (by Press Statement from She’s Sirius (by Galileo)), has the conformation and the pedigree to be a miler to 2000m filly as a 3yo.
After all, her sire won the
JJ Atkins (1600m) as a 2yo, the
Hobartville (1400m), Stan Fox (1500m) and Caulfield Guineas (1600m) as a 3yo and run 2nd in the
Randwick Guineas (1600m).
Her dam
She’s Sirius won 2 races – both at a
mile, and she is by the greatest sire in the world until his recent loss,
GALILEO – by Sadler’s Wells, a great source of middle-distance genetics.
She had only the one race start behind her at time of sale. Off the back of
two barrier trials wins at 1000m she was supported in betting on debut.
Whilst the result didn’t read appealing, a 6th of 8 runners as favourite over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast, when we reviewed the videos, she had drawn barrier 1, was laying on the back of the barriers when the gates opened and was slowly away, she got shuffled back along the fence to sit three pairs back and then was checked at the 500m and when finally free, stargazed and ran about, only warming up over the final 50m to finish 2.3 lengths away. The Stewards report says that the rider advised that she was looking for further than 1000m.
The filly had recently received a
significant pedigree boost over the previous weeks, when her 3yo half-sister named
SIRILEO MISS (Pride Of Dubai) was placed 3rd by 0.6 length in the Gr3 1800m Auria S., before a last start 5th by 1.2 length in the Gr1 South Australian Oaks.
SIRILEO MISS has a career of 6 sts: 2-2-1 and $158,400.
NOTIONS is also a half-sister to Stakes Placed
SOPHIA’S CHOICE.
SHE’S SIRIUS had 6 foals to race – 6 winners and now,
NOTIONS makes it
7 from 7.
NOTIONS had
won both trials very impressively and went to the races on Sunday 23 May for the first time over an unsuitable 1000m. That was just 3 days before being sold at the
Magic Millions.
When an endoscope was done on the filly on Monday morning after the race, and prior to the sale, the filly had an
excellent Grade 1 airway however it was noted that she had
significant amount of mucous in her throat which highlights she has an
infection which needed antibiotic treatment.
For
NOTIONS to race the way it did, with the muck in her throat,
the run was super, and her future was very bright.
The filly was also
BOBS eligible so it made sense to race a 2yo filly like this in Sydney where she can earn the additional BOBS Bonuses as well.
We expected that
NOTIONS would commence her racing career for
Dynamic Syndications approximately
6 weeks after we purchased her, once
Richard Freedman had the opportunity to see how she went under saddle, and we had given her a few easy days to settle into the Rosehill lifestyle and get over her trip south.
That’s how it panned out, as
we have raced the filly seven weeks to the day after we purchased her, and she has come out and recorded an
awe inspiring win on her debut for her
new ownership team.
We had originally intended to race her two days earlier at Kembla Grange, but that meeting was transferred to Goulburn. Then in this 2yo 1200m event she drew barrier 18 of 18 and that is a recipe for disaster. We had also accepted with her in a Maiden over 1200m on the Monday at Nowra against the older horses which is never ideal for a 2yo to take on older horses on debut and give most of the field weight. When the barrier draw came out, we had again drawn wide in 12 of 12. We elected to scratch from Goulburn and wait for the race at Nowra. With 4 scratchings, the field fell away from 12 runners to 8 runners and despite drawing wide, it was not nearly as bad as we had originally imagined.
We had
leading rider Brodie Loy on board to assist with our filly’s lack of experience, but
Brodie can only get down to 57.0kgs, so despite being given 56.5kgs we carried an extra half over, lumping 57.0kgs.
When you see the ride, its easy to understand why we use Brodie.
Our plan was to be positive, but we anticipated there may be a bit of speed drawn underneath us, so come out neutral and try to get over and get cover to follow something into the race.
It was a brilliant piece of horsemanship.
NOTIONS flew out of the gates, but Brodie took hold as three runners pushed forward. Brodie allowed them to go and then drove across when the gap appeared to settle beautifully in the
one out / one back position, on the back of the second favourite Flying Grace, who would eventually finish in third spot some 2.7 lengths behind us.
As the field passed the 800m marker,
NOTIONS was travelling sweetly in
4th spot with 100/1 pop Sallista leading on the fence, FLYING GRACE $3.90 second favourite at its girth, with 20/1 hope Rum Cake trapped 3 deep on speed, whilst Orreza (9/2 chance) was underneath us holding the fence, with a 3-length gap back to the remainder.
Waiting patiently until balancing up at the 350m mark, both Sallista and Rum Cakes quickly dropped out and
NOTIONS was 2 lengths behind Flying Grace who had set sail for the judge.
Brodie simply angled out behind that runner. Our inexperienced filly didn’t appreciate the shifting surface underfoot, but Brodie kept her balanced, as she was still half a length away at the 150m, but whilst Brodie hadn’t asked for an effort, our filly was reeling in the leader stride by stride.
Brodie pushed the
“go button” at the 120m, and she dashed away leaving them in her wake.
NOTIONS dropped them with such ease that Brodie had a look at the big screen on the inside of the track and passing the 80m took an armchair ride to the post and when the flash went off,
NOTIONS had gapped them,
recording an eased down, but widening 2.5 length win over Shewillbring with Flying Grace struggling into third spot a further head away.
It was soft, she put them away with ease, the way we would expect a filly of her class to do. It wasn’t about winning a race at Nowra. It was about teaching our filly to be a racehorse. It was about laying the foundation stones, to ensure we were right in our assessment of her ability. It was also about breaking her maiden status so when she has better races in sight later in the year, she has already broken her Maiden and earned prizemoney giving her an advantage over many of her peers.
NOTIONS picked up $17,905 being $12,280 for the Win plus a $5,625 BOBS Bonus.
NOTIONS was sent to Nowra on the similar programme to another handy one we had debut this time last year named
LOVE TAP. He went through a Nowra Maiden to a Goulburn race and then won the
Gr3 Gloaming Stakes.
We have no doubt that
NOTIONS could measure up to similar company if things go right for her in the Spring, but in the interim, we just take it race by race.

Turned out in spectacular order by RICHARD FREEDMAN, the race commentators couldn’t say enough
kind words about how terrific our 2yo filly looked in the parade ring and she raced up to those looks. Our only slight concern was her first look at this type of surface, but she handled it with ease.
Trial watchers who viewed her trial at Canterbury on a Heavy track, which was won by Larkspur Run who came out of that trial to win in town, would have been impressed with what they saw
Nash Rawiller achieve. Officially beaten 5 lengths, those that watch and understand trials would have seen what she did the final 50m and then did past the post. It was a terrific trial.
Undoubtedly that’s why she was short in the market,
being backed in 20% from pre-market opening at $5.00 into $2.10 before just easing to $2.40 at start time.
NOTIONS is certainly one to follow in the future.
DYNAMIC SYNDICATIONS were thrilled that NOTIONS Win smashed through our own glass ceiling of 68 wins in a season when she recorded win number 69.
It was also our 723rd Winner overall.
NOTIONS also recorded our 257th Individual Winner from 305 Individual Runners = 84.3%
Well Done to All !
