ASTERN Son BACKROWER Far Too Tough

A class 1 over 1400m at Newcastle on Tuesday was fought out by a pair of three-year-olds with stakes ambitions. The Freedman-trained ASTERN Colt BACKROWER went off a short-priced favourite and got the job done, against the willing and progressive Extreme Choice filly Wollombi. Backrower has now had 4 starts: 2 Wins, 1 Second, 1 Third. ASTERN is having a terrific run to start the new season. Backrower was the fifth (5th) Individual Winner for his sire in the first month of the new 2022-23 Racing Season and follows-on from ASTERN having two (2) Gr3 placed runners-up on Saturday with AFT CABIN and GOLDEN MILE plus a win by Miss Tapestry on Sunday and another placing of Astern’s Girl on Monday.

Black-Type Weekend For ASTERN Progeny

Saturday saw Darley based sire ASTERN – winner of the Gr1 Golden Rose, produce two (2) colts that faced the starter with both finishing runners-up in their respective Gr3 assignments. AFT CABIN added valuable black type to his pedigree when he was runner-up to Jacquinot in the H.D.F. McNeil Stakes Gr3 at Flemington. GOLDEN MILE was very impressive at Rosehill when resuming from a spell, finishing runner-up to Kibou in the Up and Coming Stakes Gr3. In the USA, Oxymore made his Stakes class debut a Winning one, as he out-toughed No Nay Hudson in the straight to win the Skidmore Stakes by over a length at Saratoga last week. Dundeel's book quality and yearling prices have followed the upward trajectory of his escalating career. DUNDEEL had a marvellous season. DUNDEEL amongst his peers finished in third place by winners. Zoustar produced 154 / 306 (50%) and Spirit Of Boom produced 132 / 275 (48%) with Dundeel 106 / 230 (46%). These boys were the only 5th crop sires to break 100+ winners in the season. Whilst DUNDEEL was Fourth by Earnings. SHAMUS AWARD thanks Incentivise ($5.4m) was First with $14.470m. Second was ZOUSTAR with $12,457m and Third was SPIRIT OF BOOM with $9.592m and DUNDEEL earned $6.836m.
