With the barnstorming win of SEMILLION (Shalaa x Sistonic) in the 2YO Gr3 Kindergarten Stakes at Royal Randwick last Saturday, it has proven timely to cast the spotlight on this Group of Second Crop Sires in Australia and identify which Sire is punching above his weight and which stallion to avoid. We are now well into the 2021-22 Racing Season, and halfway through the Sydney Autumn Carnival, so it is perfect to capture a snapshot of the deeds of the Second Crop Sires, those Stallions whose oldest progeny are currently 3yo’s.

Race 2 at Kyneton on Thursday saw an impressive resumption from a spell of the very impressive winner DIGNIFIED DOUBT (3yo filly) who was strong through the line in a Hygain Set Weights Maiden Plate over 1218m for her trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace. Heading to the post as a $2.10 favourite in a field of 9 runners after scratching, with stable rider John Allen up on top, Dignified Doubt had drawn barrier 8 of 9 runners but the awkward draw made no difference to the result.

Air Force Blue x Angora) demoralised her peers when breaking her maiden in fine style, as she resumed from a spell at Hawkesbury on Thursday to claim Race 3 the Australian Thoroughbred Breeders Club Fillies and Mares Maiden Handicap over 1100m. OTTILIE recorded a time of 1:04.86 with an all the way eased down victory.

SAINT OF KATOWICE (5yo B. g by ELZAAM from SILESIAN (IRE)) ridden by leading rider Jamie Kah, and carrying Top Weight of 62.0kgs, produced a one act affair, as Jamie steered our $2.50 favourite straight to the lead from the outside marble, and just kept improving on her position to win, under a hands and heels romp, by an eased down but still widening 2.8 lengths margin over runner-up and second favourite Lunares, with third favourite Vidiano finishing in third spot some 4.5 lengths behind Saint Of Katowice. Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace Saint Of Katowice won Race 7, the 50 Year Life Member – Anthony Lloyd Benchmark 64 over 1500m at Sandown on the Hillside course.

Darley Stud's flagship stallion EXCEED AND EXCEL moved to within six of a double-century of stakes winners when his 2yo colt LEFT THE BUILDING scored a last stride win in Saturday's Amelia Park - Perth Stakes (1100m) at Ascot. So far this season, EXCEED AND EXCEL has sired 16 Black Type horses being: 5 Stakes Winners and 11 Stakes Placegetters. EXCEED AND EXCEL Stands at Darley NSW and last season had a service fee of $132,000.
